2018 VW Atlas

Atlas was a Greek Titan condemned for all eternity to hold the heavens on his shoulders. Sounds boring and pretty fatiguing. So why has Volkswagen named their new model after him? It might be because the Atlas is the first in a series of vehicles VW is designing specifically for the North American market, and on Atlas’s mighty shoulders will Volkswagen usher in this new chapter of its existence. Well that’s all very nice and dramatic, but just what is this new vehicle?

What is the Volkswagen Atlas?

The Volkswagen Atlas is a completely new, 3-row, 7-passenger crossover vehicle designed to take on the likes of the Ford Explorer and the Toyota Highlander. This is an extremely important vehicle segment in North America, and Atlas marks Volkswagen’s first foray into it. Separating Atlas from its rivals are its looks. It is unarguably handsome, with a touch of sportiness here (eg, the sloping rear windshield) and a touch of boldness there (eg, the flat-topped fender flares).

3 rows and 7 passengers. It sounds big.

Big is right. Size matters to buyers in this crossover segment, and VW stretched its versatile MQB platform to meet their needs. The Atlas is 16.5 feet long, 6.5 feet wide and about 6 feet tall. Front-to-back, the passenger arrangement will be 2-3-2. This configuration provides the 2-person third row with enough space to comfortably accommodate adult humans, not just baby humans. This means the Atlas will be able to take a group of 7 adults wherever it is groups of 7 adults go.

What’s it got powertrain-wise?

The Atlas will be available with two different engine/drivetrain combos. The first combines the award-winning 238hp 2.0 TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder with a front wheel drive system, while the second combines the venerable 280hp 3.6L VR6 with 4MOTION all wheel drive (with Snow, Sport, On-Road and Off-Road settings). Both combos will be paired to a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

What’s it got technology-wise?

The Atlas has all sorts of stuff: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink, a 12-speeaker Fender audio system, adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear traffic alert, lane departure warning with steering assist, and anew reconfigurable digital display called Digital Cockpit.
